When you first boot the stack you will be presented with a black screen and a message that asks that you wait “One moment please...” What’s going on here is the checking of your operating environment. HyperFREAKS™ won’t allow you to run it on a machine that can’t display it at the correct size or bit depth. If you get an error message it will tell you what you must do to “fix” the situation. You might not have QuickTime loaded for instance. If your Mac passes all tests then the stack will load the Colorize XCMD, assemble the title screen, and display it. You’ll also notice that some circus music will begin to play (info on disabling it permanently later in this doc).
Clicking anywhere will turn off the music. Otherwise it will loop forever. You will notice that there is no menuBar. Don’t worry, you won’t need it. All of HyperFREAKS™ functions are performed by the four buttons at the top of its window.
“FREAKS”
Holding the mouse down on it will drop a menu of available Freaks that you can visit. It also allows you to return to the “Title Screen” if you wish.
“PRINT”
While visiting a Freak you might want to print out their photo or story (text). This button will give you these options. Because the “screen” that you see is pieced together by the Colorize XCMD it is not possible to print it as is. You must print out the photos and text separately. If available in your printers dialog, choose “grayscale” while printing photos (200% looks pretty good) and “black and white” for text.
“ABOUT”
Brings up a box that gives you our name and suggests that you send us $25 for the full version (20 Freaks). Also allows you to print out an order form. There is additional info on the order form about some of the Freaks that are included in the full version.
“QUIT”
Gives you a way to exit the program, either to HyperCard’s Home stack or to the Finder. Command-Q also will work.
THE CIRCUS MUSIC
You might get sick of the music that plays in the “Title Screen” or for discretion’s sake you might just want to turn it off. There is a “hidden feature” that allows you to disable the music. Pressing Command-S brings up a dialog that will let you turn the music on or off. If you turn it off it will stay off (even the next time you boot the stack) until you turn it back on.
